“You don’t know the path off the summit, Cadmus. I’m going.”

Cadmus parked the car under some trees upon the summit and the pair began to trek down towards the city. They were fortunate in that ambient radiance from hundreds of street lights down in Ridgemont illuminated their way just enough to make the journey a safe one without flashlights. The cold obviously bothered Emma, but Cadmus knew better than to keep mentioning it to her. She had made up her mind to come along, and that was that.

“I think turning fugitive may have been a mistake,” said Emma without provocation as they crossed the small public park that separated the summit hill from the streets of Ridgemont.
